ripperdoc's clinic

A schizofrenic braindump, a stream of cyberpunk, post-cyberpunk, neopunk, futurism and sci-fi items, inspiration for my writing and game design. Usually managed by my trusty auto-posting AI residing in a possum-brain in my kitchen sink.

Go ahead and inject into my brainfeed via Twitter or Tumblr submit. Aslo, go ahead and challenge my AI with a question (warning, it bites).

Stealing people’s CPU cycles

So I’m very fascinated by bitcoin, which of course has other implications on the future, but one thing that fascinates me is how it needs to leech on people’s computing power. Of course, this is voluntary for most, but some have figured out that they can steal other’s CPU cycles. Recent examples:

BitcoinPlus, that runs a Javascript when users visits your website. You could consider it a payment for watching your website, or you’re basically stealing computing power. (don’t sign up for this, there are many signs that there is a scam behind it!).

And recently, a Skype-malware, which installs itselfs and uses 99% of CPU power to mine for someone else.

Botnets you say? Not exactly the same, they have mostly been used as a tool for Denial of Service attacks, but once a CPU cycle has monetary value, maybe they could also be used for this.

Our neopunk game will certainly have routines for stealing other people’s cores…

RATters - guys who install malware to spy on people in their webcams and remote control their computer. Hollywood-stuff, except it’s real. Fascinating read. Ars Technica

Pwnie Express - Complete tricked out hacker-station inside a power strip.
So Charlie Stross mentioned the idea of automated hacking servers placed inside power plugs of public areas. Seems Pwnie Express are making products just for that!

Wise words! You should write for our cyberpunk game! (in Swedish… )

Protecting yourself from surveillance in the wireless world is a lot like how people protected themselves from scrying and other black magic.
Don’t let them see your eyes. Don’t let them get a lock of your hair. And definitely don’t let them know your True Name.

Some supporters of the Anonymous hacking collective who believed they
were downloading only a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack tool
were actually tricked into downloading Zeus malware onto their computers
as well. This variant harvests email passwords and online banking
account access credentials. The users thought they were downloading
Slowloris, but the software was infected with the ZeuS variant.
